February is Black History Month! Each week we will be spotlighting Black-led organizations creating change in Charlotte. Learn more about the impact these organizations and their incredible leaders are making every day. We begin with West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition. The second week we highlight For The Struggle. The third week we feature City Startup Labs, and the fourth week we feature JazzArts Charlotte. More on all of these organizations below.
Room in the Inn Sheltering Ministry: For the past two months, First UMC Charlotte has been welcoming overnight guests from Roof Above every other Sunday night. On each Sunday we host, we ask for volunteers to help set up beds in Fellowship Hall after worship. Please reach out to our coordinator, Joy Cleary, at joclear24@gmail.com if you can help on March 8th and/or 22nd. Thank you!

The celebration is coming — and we need you! Join us Sunday, March 1 after the 11am service, as we kick off planning for FUMC's 100th anniversary. Lunch will be provided.
There's plenty to do and a place for everyone, from events and programming to outreach and communications. Come find your spot in this once-in-a-century milestone. Please email Hillary@Charlottefirst.org if you will be attending the meeting. Thank you!
West Boulevard Neighborhood Coalition works to improve public health, economic development, and education for 19 historically Black neighborhoods in West Charlotte.
Their flagship project is the Three Sisters Market, a community-owned food cooperative opening in 2025 — the neighborhood's first functional grocery store in over 30 years. The 12,000 square foot market will provide fresh food access and serve as a community hub.
The coalition also runs Seeds for Change, a youth program teaching farming and entrepreneurship, supports local businesses through the West Boulevard Merchants' Association, and works with developers to ensure affordable housing in new developments.
For The Struggle responds to issues identified by Black communities in Charlotte, advocating with and on behalf of those communities. Their work includes a Community Response Team that addresses community needs, home improvement projects for seniors through the Elder Response Initiative, voter education and engagement through the Eatmon Project, and SaluteU, a program providing resources to youth involved with the criminal justice system.
City Startup Labs addresses Charlotte's wealth disparities by closing the entrepreneurial divide for underrepresented populations. Founded in 2014, they provide entrepreneurship training, business incubation, and workforce development primarily for young Black men and returning citizens (formerly incarcerated individuals). Their flagship programs include the ReEntry Entrepreneurship Program, which has supported over 150 graduates, and Restorative Pathways, a workforce readiness program in partnership with Atrium Health that has placed 102 graduates in healthcare careers. They recently launched ReConnex, a justice-impacted co-owned device repair business opening this May on North Tryon Street, bringing affordable tech services to underserved communities.
On this last day of Black History Month, we are featuring our fourth Black-led organization creating change in Charlotte. We'd like to introduce you to JazzArts Charlotte.
Founded in 2009, JazzArts Charlotte is the city's premier nonprofit jazz organization, dedicated to keeping one of America's most treasured art forms alive and thriving. Located at the VAPA Center in uptown Charlotte, they pursue their mission through live performance, music education, and musician support. Their signature Jazz Room series brings nationally recognized artists to Charlotte, while education programs—including the JazzArts Academy, youth ensembles, Jazz in Schools, and a summer music camp at UNC Charlotte—introduce the next generation to the joy of jazz. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just getting started, JazzArts Charlotte offers a welcoming entry point into this living art form.
